Receiver and Speakers

Receiver and Speakers

Thursday, April 17th, 2003

Cost: $400

Time: 5 hours

Theory: The stock "sub" of the premium sound system was rotting and the stock speakers, although good at low volumes, were largely inadequate when the t-tops were removed.

Opinion: The CD Receiver is a Panasonic 8400. The Speakers are 5.25" Infinity Perfect Components with crossover. The amplifier is a Phoenix Gold amp (I later replaced it with an Audiobahn amp) that I had from about three years ago. 100 watts goes to each crossover where it is fed to the tweeter and midrange. I custom installed the tweeters in the kick panels. Overall, it sounds great. The speakers go down to 80Hz clearly and can be loud enough to enjoy on the highway with the T-Tops off, even near the MR2's max speed (I recommend against driving this fast...). The speakers can hit pretty hard at low ranges. I have been asked if I put subwoofers in the car. I have not put subs in the car. I had intended to, but now I am not so sure. The car sounds great now and, although I would like subs, the money might be better spent on performance parts...
